Be yourself, because you won’t succeed in the long-term unless you are. Take time, pains and care to be the best that you can be, but not to be something you’re not.
I certainly agree with your insights here, Simon. We learn very early to shape ourselves into what others want us to be -- initially from our parents, who, after all, control our food and shelter. Later we are taught to conform in school by well-meaning teachers who, themselves, must conform, and who can make our lives a living hell if we don't. Denying our unique expression in favour of conforming can become so habitual we don't even notice it.
Breaking out of that habit takes courage, but I have found it's the only way to be truly happy. When you are assured of the value and worthiness of your genuine self, THAT'S when you're really useful to others.
